OK, I didn't want to ask this before, but are the DVDs which you are 
trying to play original, retail, discs or are they copies of the 
pressed, original, retail DVDs?

(One of the things you mentioned seems to indicate that the copy of a 
DVD went wrong and the DVD cannot be read properly.)
