Correction to my earlier:  11.10 will go End of Life in 30 days. You might want to upgrade. As 
To your error #1: you DID connect to Internet, right?

Error #2: you got something non-standard installed.  Open a terminal and run the following commands

Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get upgrade
Sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.  


Observe and respond to messages you see in the terminal
