home automation

I realize this is not strictly a "tech support" question, but I didn't see
any other appropriate list for this, so please don't flame me...

I'm looking to get into home automation and I was wondering if there were
any on the list that could point me to any good resources that are out
there relating to Ubuntu. My goals were to accomplish the following:

MUST
- be controlled by an Ubuntu Linux server box.
- control power.
- control HVAC (this is actually more important to me than power control)
- have a web portal that I can access both within my home network and from
the internet when not at home.

BONUS POINTS FOR
- security camera access.
- security system interface (door open/close sensors, etc).

I'm basically starting from scratch. I've toyed with the idea of picking
up an X10 kit, but I'm not 100% sure how well that plays with being
controlled by Linux. I'm done some research on linuxha.com, but there are
so many different options out there and so many different combinations of
hardware that I'm not quite sure where to start. If you've had any success
in this area, please feel free to shout out what your setup looks like.
Any information would be helpful to me at this point.

TIA
