as the list isnt too busy at the moment, its probably ok.
when the list gets really busy I would minimize going off topic.

XP is the first Windows I used, that's why I didnt go for earlier ones,
but I have visited companies in town who use Windows 2000,
and when XP was current, a lot of people did everything with 98.
its partly that it costs time to learn to use a program, eg
how to workaround bugs,
some shops use really ancient systems, there was some shop
where I think they were using some pre Windows system.

this is especially true for the government here, where they are mostly
just using say emails and wordprocessing, for basic letters.
where you can use more or less any sufficiently recent computer. yet they will
upgrade their
machines and use networks. you dont even need a network, just use the
internet as a de facto network. eg use a website instead of a file server.
with a wireless modem, you can have lots of PCs communicating via the same
modem, eg I use my laptop and tower from the same wireless modem,
how much bandwidth do you need to send a few emails each day?
I heard that the german government prefer to use Linux as this avoids
licensing costs.
the british government blows huge amounts of money on unnecessary technology.
actually I often find that paper and pen are much faster than using computers.
I was having some decorative work done with the house, and tried to draw
what I meant with an art program to email to a company. But it was too time
consuming, eventually I decided to sketch on some paper with a bic pen,
and drew exactly what I meant just like that. I used some colour pencils for
colour. I then photographed the picture and emailed that!
with books also, I prefer hardcopy, and always print out computer
documentation.
somehow I can relate to ink on paper much better than the same information on
screen,
I think partly because printed images are much higher resolution than screen
images.
just with photos I prefer on screen images, as printers tend to be
unsatisfactory
and storing printed images is too inconvenient.
and you can place say 10 pages of text on your desk if the information is
complicated.
when I was dealing with companies as regards decorative work, I noticed that
they tended to draw with pencils, then if a change was suggested they
would modify the image by using an eraser!

organisations will upgrade their entire computers, when in fact
you can recycle most of the components of a computer if not the entirety
and just reinstall the OS.
I recycle the mouse, keyboard, monitor, optical drives, hard drives,
loudspeakers. I have migrated the same floppy drive and optical drive
to successive computers,
I use floppy disks sometimes to transfer information to and from ancient
machines.
as my older machines dont have USB or SATA.
