Is T-Bird suitable for gmail from multiple devices?

No, they wouldn't be synced. Thunderbird uses locally stored contacts.
It has read access to LDAP and since "recently", there's a bug for getting
write access → https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86405

Another possibility might be to use something like CardDAV. Don't know
how widespread that is…
