Acer V5-171 Windows 8 + Ubuntu help

I recently built a couple of systems and experienced a blank screen with
Ubuntu during install. Luckily, I was able to change a setting in the bios
that provides 'legacy' as well as UFEI support. I could also disable UEFI,
but that wasn't necessary. 

I looked in the manual for your Acer V5-171 and didn't see any instructions
about bios settings, so I can't tell if there any such options. There are
also several bios updates for your Acer V5-171, but in typical Acer fashion
there is no changelog or any explanation as to what the updates are for.
