OTOH, if I don't tell the whole blow by blow, I'm withholding info. That
isn't cool either.

And I have some more info.

Both the ubuntu 12.04.2 cd, and the kubuntu 12.04.2 dvd, if you take the
try it branch on the first small screen, will then allow one to properly
setup the networking so it works fine, and if you then install from the
install icon, networking continues to work well.

So that then indicates its something in the right hand branch, the "install
now" selection of that first screen, about the size of a postcard. Doing
it that way flat doesn't work for either disk. I have the kubuntu 12.04.2
install done, and have copied about 50 Gb of my stuff to the new drive.
The only thing I noted was that the icon install method asked me if I
wanted to download updates as it installed, and I put a check mark in that
check box.

But when I did the initial reboot, and found I did have networking, the
next thing I did was "apt-get install synaptic midnight-commander". I then
fired up synaptic, had it reload, and it updated another 560 something
packages, as if no updates had been pulled in during the install.

Barring some real fubar, I should have much of the stuff I use here, re-
installed and working by this time tomorrow night.

FWIW, using muon to handle what I've done with synaptic, I would still be
doing things one package at a time a week from now. Does it have a reload
option someplace? I didn't find one.

Thanks again C., and whoever it was that mentioned using the install icon
once it was fully booted from the optical media. That was the Magic
Twanger.

IMO? The first little screen's removal, forcing it to be fully booted
before the installation is offered/contemplated, is the best, and probably
least man hours needed to do the fix.

Cheers, Gene
