system does not boot install cd

Good point.

The latest news is that the drive "keeps blinking" but the DVD is never 
recognised.
My remote helper (a worker at the hosting center, who has experience 
with these things) thinks the lense is probably dirty, a common problem 
with older servers.

But it might be that it is not a DVD drive, but a CD drive, as Damon 
mentioned earlier.
I'll need to ask him if there is a logo on the drive, or some other 
characteristic that tells us which it is.

Unfortunately it is the end of his shift now, so I'll have to wait till 
tomorrow before continuing.

(My biggest question right now is how the current OS was installed not 
that long ago, but I still can't reach the person who did that.)
