How do I set permissions on a samba connection?

There's two places you may need to set these permissions, on the
server (the drive itself) and on the client (your PC). Generally, if
you've plugged the disk in and Ubuntu has automatically mounted it,
you'll have write-access as far as the client is concerned.

On the server, though, you may need to log in and set up users such
that the clients can log in and then gain write access. 

If you're reasonably sure you've got the server configured
appropriately, then it is probably that you need to adjust the mount
or mountpoint. Could you open a terminal (press ctrl-alt-t) and paste
the output of this command into a reply, please:

    mount

that will list all mounted volumes and some information about each,
including where they are mounted and with which options.
