Is GS broken on 10.04.4 LTS?

You do realize that 10.04 is no longer supported as a desktop operating system
anymore, right?
If you are still using 10.04, you are no longer getting any security updates.

I suggest migrating to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, perhaps your issue is solved there.
