Well they list it as compatible in their documentation.
Regardless, I think I've found the solution to my problem. It can be
found here:

I went from 2.5 fps originally, 50 fps with the nouveau driver and
finally 550 fps with the latest installed nvidia drivers as per the web
page above.
nvidia driver version shows 304.84
I hope this might help someone else.
