recovering deleted files

Thanks for the quick reply! After a bit of learning, I was able to
copy deleted files to a USB disk, or so I thought. It ran 'forever'
until it filled up a same-size disk, which should not happen. It did
look like it copied much what I asked it to - BUT - for some reason it
interpreted a .txt file in one of the dirs as a '/' dir, and began
another copy of the entire disk there. It looks like it was doing this
recursively. The .txt had nothing to do with the circular links, which
is what I thought might be the cause, so don't know why it did that.
Perhaps a partially overwritten file?
But, because of this problem, it did not get all the info I wanted.
And, in yet another screwup in mounting for a repeat try, I deleted
even more dirs on the original disk. I'm not making good progress with
this. :-(
I made a dd copy of the original disk and started to restore stuff
from backups - the usual too-old ones we often have. :-( I ran into
another problem with the desktop, but I'll post that as another
topic.
Any suggestions re fixing this would be much appreciated.
