recovering deleted files

I thought I might be able to recover with known user tools, but it's
much harder than I thought - the tools don't work entirely as
advertised, and I got some very strange things happening. And, some
data may be partially overwritten, with unknown-to-me results using
the tools. And, yes it's an an arm and a leg and possibly even other
body parts when they've got you by the - you get the idea. :-)
