vncviewer keyboard

Hello,

I am trying to support someone using her linux system via krfb on her side and 
vncviewer on my side (TightVNC Viewer version 1.3.9). Both sides have german 
locale.
I can connect to the rfb-server. Mouse operation and screen transfer is also 
fine. But the keyboard is not correctly transferred to the other side.
If I type "z" a "y" appears and vice versa. That is not very comfortable but 
would be okay for the purpose. The problem is that all letters appear 
capitalized. I can still type small letters on the remote side by typing 
capital letters on my side.
But I cannot type any numbers or symbols to be reached on a US-Keyboard 
without SHIFT. e.g. the "0" alwasy produces a ")" and the key right of the "0" 
always produces a "_" on the remote side regardless of the SHIFT/CAPS-LOCK 
state on my side. And that is truely painful when trying support someone. 

What configuration/ options I will have to look for?
On which hard- /software-entity the keyboard-events do get translated into 
chars when using vnc?
