Wow, it's been awhile since I blew up my own password, but I dimly 
recall that the password is really set in /etc/shadow. If you still have 
your root terminal open, then a gedit or nano of it to remove all those 
chars between "root:" and the next colon ":" should remove the password 
so hitting return on password could work.

But, wait until others chime in before actually doing that. Please, as 
much has changed since. Ric
