Laptop never updates right

The only time I've ever had issues before like that was from manually
installing experimental versions of certain packages (libs, etc) that
messed up the versioning.

Have you installed anything funky?

Also, does anything appear in /var/log/apt/term.log to indicate what
is failing to install?

And finally, what if you just ignore the gui (cancel instead of
allowing it to upgrade) and do a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" instead.

FWIW, I always ignore the GUI and do the following:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
