Laptop never updates right

Incidentally, I recently encountered this kind of error on a desktop.
Updates would fail to install because there was not enough disk space.
Closer investigation showed that it wasn't disk space per se, but rather
the inode table on the ext4 partition was filled up from having a bunch
of kernel packages, each of which has a bazillion small files.
