DVD drivers for external usb dvd550s-H03 8, ubuntu precise pagolin/puppy precise

I also have a couple of USB drives that whilst work perfectly on windows don't 
appear to be recognised on xubuntu. The only solution i've found after a google 
is to write one which is apparently not too difficult... i'm still researching 
it.
