Well there's that - many desktops come with their own, e.g. both GNOME and KDE.
Lubuntu uses xscreensaver.
One objection to it I've heard is simple but a good observation: if
you enable security, then when you wake your PC from the screensaver,
you have to give your login credentials to a 3rd party binary. That's
not ideal. But then, it's already on your PC, so the real risk is low.
