there was a big argument a while ago which resulted in nearly all of the
ffmpeg devs to move to a newly created a fork called libav, thats what
debians (and thus ubuntus) ffmpeg packages are using as upstream ... 

http://libav.org/contact.html has info on their IRC channel ... 

seems they are still grumpy at each other if the guys in #ffmpeg didnt
point you there :)
