login problem

I'd forgotten the password on an old installation of ubuntu 12.04.  I
changed the password but now when I log in with the new password the screen
goes black and returns to the login.  When I control/alt/F3 I can log in
using the new password.

I tried following the matter here
http://askubuntu.com/questions/223501/ubuntu-gets-stuck-in-a-login-loop but
no luck so far.

Any suggestions?
