No ethernet connection with new instal of 12.04 desktop on Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop - lshw says "network unclaimed"

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I've tried installing from
the live session but it hasn't worked - still no ethernet, in fact no
activity at all at the ethernet hub. So now I'm going to try 13.04 - not
very hopeful, in view of Gene Heskett's comment, but it's worth a try!
