When you can get into tty2 can you determine what's going on - is the
machine CPU, memory or I/O bound, for example? You can use the 'free'
command to see memory usage and 'top' will show CPU usage (and allow you
to sort by different metrics), though top itself has a good deal of
overhead.
It's not a particular problem I've had, but Thunderbird isn't really
known for being lightweight...
