For me, the problem is remote desktops. I like to install Ubuntu Server and then install a minimal desktop on my servers. This allows me to log in and run various programs, then I can close the session window and leave those programs running so I can come back to them later. Also, some programs like gparted need a desktop.
I like the programs that are available to gnome, and some stuff I compile and install like bacula, works well in gnome.
However, starting with 13.10 I have been unable to make vnc4server, or tightvncserver, or xrdp (which relies on vnc4server) work. Same is true for the x11rdp scripts and how tos from scarygliders. All I get are black or gray screens when connecting.
Vino, (which uses vnc) does work to share the console desktop, but that's a problem for a headless server. But if vino can work, then maybe I just haven’t found the right way to launch the unity desktop using vnc4server?
For the last couple of days I have been looking for a solution, even trying and then immediately dumping the latest fedora. Along the way I've found that Mate in combination with Ubuntu Server actually works well, is easy to install, and is surprisingly fast over vnc or xrdp.
I cannot make Cinnamon work when installed directly to Ubuntu Server. Maybe because of its reliance on GTK+ 3? I have not tried installing Cinnamon on Ubuntu Desktop to see if that would give me a working session to use with vnc. But that’s just too much bloat...
