I'm looking at /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log in nano.....interesting lines
(to me)...

Authenticate result for user pete: Success
User pete authorized
Greeter requests session ubuntu
Using session ubuntu
Stopping greeter
Session 1522: sending SIGTERM
Session 1522 exited with return value 0
Greeter quit
Dropping privileges to uid 1000
Calling setregid
Calling setresguid

Leads me to think permissions problem, but what / how / why eludes me!
