Pete, do you have another session loaded like XFCE?? If so, just chose 
that on the login screen.

If not you could go command line and install it from there.
'sudo apt-get install xfce4"

It seems all goes well until it attempts to run the "Ubuntu" session. 
Install another session, like XFCE and give that a whirl, if you have 
the bandwidth and drive space. It's worth a shot. Ric
