Something REALLY got hosed. As another responder mentions, save your 
data, re-install clean. Restore your data, but NOT the blooming entire 
home directory. Stick with new configs as much as possible. The only 
thing I return to duty from backup is ~/.thunderbird (or whatever mailer 
you use) and ~/.mozilla

You should be all nice and running. If you have synaptic, it can 
generate a list of packages to re-install for you to save to medium. 
Stay away from any video driver install from any source other than the 
repos. Use the force. Ric
