Essentially you can't now.  You can in theory turn off the graphics with
options in the Grub configuration but in reality all that produces is
long intervals with a completely blank screen and the occasional burst
of 'terminal type' output.

.... sorry, I've been tryng to get back to watching the boot sequence
for many, many, versions and it just doesn't work.
