I hope someone else can point to a public example of an XFA-containing PDF
file folks can test.

In the meantime, you MIGHT try making a copy of the file and seeing what
happens if you use drop_xfa command in the pdftk utility (available in
Ubuntu's software center). You might also see if you can open (a copy of)
the file using PDF-shuffler (also in the software center) or using the PDF
import feature of LibreOffice or GIMP.

I suspect pdftk will delete all or most of the file's content, but on the
other hand I have been quite impressed over the years at its ability to
handle unexpected pdf content. If you want to read more about it without
installing it, here is the man page:
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man1/pdftk.1.html

Nowadays I use PDF-shuffler for the things I used to use pdftk for, but
pdftk can do much much more. Unfortunately pdftk has a damnedly
idiosyncratic syntax. (In other words I think most folks might find it hard
to use.)
