Google Chrome failed to set tilde

That's not a tilde, that's an acute accent, as in ratón. This is a
tilde: mañana, pequeño.
As you can see, it works in Chrome on Ubuntu - that is how I typed them!
Does it still work in other programs?
How do you type it - do you need a Compose key?
What desktop are you using - Unity, Xfce, what?
