Audio Problems

Ok, I have a full installation of Ubuntu now.
I still don't have any audio.
The built in speakers on my laptop work fine until I plug in my computer 
speakers to the external speaker jack.
Nothing is wired differently than it was when everything worked 
perfectly on windows.

I tried to find information on my sound card and came up with this.
Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS690 HDMI Audio 
[Radeon Xpress 1200 Series]


I don't know if that is the info needed or not.

In system settings in "sound" nothing is muted, volume is up.
I am clueless.
It seems the audio stops as soon as it detects that I plug in external 
speakers.
Any help is appreciated.
