Toshiba laptop wireless networking erratic and slow

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55t-A running an up to date Saucy. I am
having great difficulty connecting wirelessly to other machines on my
home network or to the internet. After multiple tries I can usually
connect but the connection is problematic and slow. I don't think that
my router is the problem. My daughter has a lenovo thinkpad running
12.04 and it connects with no problem. While she was here over the
weekend I conducted some tests, pinging various machines in sets of 99
pings.

Lenovo --> desktop avg 1.76 ms with zero pkt loss
Toshiba --> desktop avg 86.30 ms with 10% pkt loss
Desktop --> Lenovo avg 12.85 ms with zero pkt loss
Desktop --> Toshiba avg 84.82 ms with 12% pkt loss

The results of lspci:

The 01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 07)

05:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188EE
Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

The driver in use is rtl8188ee. Googling the driver didn't produce any
useful info. Software & Updates didn't show any additional drivers.

Hoping someone else is using this adapter and knows how to get better
results.

Thanks, Jim
