zapped boot info

I have the 12.04 cd/dvd to reinstall 12.04.  It gives me the option to do
"something else" as I don't want to do the other two options, since I don't
think they will work (install to side of other or use whole disk or
something like that).  Will this work to reinstall over a current version
of ubuntu and keep the apps/settings?
