I finally gave up trying to solve the problem getting the 
MFC-6490CW to work  and bought VueScan.  It works over the 
network without a hitch and does a decent job at OCR to a 
text file as well. Just thought I would post and let others 
know if you can't get Xsane to work properly for your 
scanner, you can try VueScan. They let you download a copy 
and try it to see if it works properly with your scanner 
before you actually buy it.
