I'm not a regular user of Ubuntu, but I believe that if you want to run
something that requires root privileges, you type

sudo filename

and it will run.
I'm not sure how that works, since in other distros, you have to
install yourself in the sudoers file, but maybe Ubuntu does that for 
you. . . .
