Does deleting a partition below Ubuntu mess up grub?

Wasn't there an Ubuntu-only patch for grub1 to understand UUIDs?

IIRC, "root=(hdX,Y)" where sdX(Y+1) was the "/boot" device was
replaced by "uuid uuid_of_/boot_device"
