Yes, I think it is obvious that sudo works. Otherwise it would not be 
possible to (try to) reinstall the kernel. No matter if it is synaptic 
or sudo apt-get, both need sudo to run the commands as root. IMHO the 
question is why depmod doesn't work. It could be a problem with depmod 
itself or only when run for the newly installed kernel.
