MKV video files

I have always had audio probs with .mkv's on ubuntu and its derivatives,
normally going out of sync with the video.
Strangely my pi based media centre plays them without issue (raspbmc with
the mpeg2 codecs purchased) wether the codecs are what does it I don't
know!
If you find an answer I will be interested to have it aswell !
I'd put the problems down to my ageing hardware but I could be wrong!
