Installing Xane

I have installed Xane on my W500 laptop. When I try to use it with my 
epson photoscanner it fails with an error:
snapscan:libusb:001:006: invalid argument.
Does this mean there is a problem with the usb port?  I tried another 
port but got a similar error wher the final 006 became 011.
It does not find the scanner which is part of my XP-100 printer.

Can any one tell me what I need to do to be able to use my scanners?
