You don't need to install the entire *kubuntu-desktop* in order to get
some of the best kde goodies - for example *dolphin* with all its bells
and whistles (especially the 'split wiev') or *k3b* or *digikam* or
*kdenlive* etc., etc... All you need to do is making xubuntu
'kde-aware'. That option is hidden somewhere in xubuntu's settings manager.
On the other hand you can get the full package by issuing:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
alongside xubuntu. I've dome that many times - albeit in the reverse
mode, by installing xubuntu-desktop alongside my kubuntu-desktop - with
no side effects. Just choose the desktop environment at the login prompt.
