folder sharing with Ubuntu 14.04

Hi
I have just updated to 14.05 LTS for both host and guest with Vmware 
Workstation 10.
All went well except that I cannot get the shared folders to work on the 
guest VM.

Tried an older 12.04 VM and this was still working until a system update 
and now it does not work either.

Have tried to use some of the patches but these seem to be for later 
kernel versions and no luck.

Current kernel is 3.16.0-30 generic

Have been going around in circles for a while with this.

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance
