Did you check with pidof or running ps aux?

For my openbox install I needed to clear the XDG_CONFIG_DIRS variable,
to prohibit autostart by /etc/xdg/autostart/ desktop files and to ensure
that only the files mentioned in openbox's autostart file get executed.
Sometimes you also should check what's executed by systemd. If you
install a packe with tools you need, including a daemon you don't need,
it gets started anyway, so you need to disable it, assumed it does cause
issues.

[rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ cat /mnt/moonstudio/home/weremouse/.config/openbox/autostart
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=""
parcellite -n &
(sleep 1 && lxpanel) &
(sleep 1 && fbpanel) &
(sleep 1 && xfce4-power-manager) &
