ls /dev/sd*

You do not get
fdisk: cannot open /dev/sda: No such file or directory
and at the same time the output of parted -l shows sdb only and not sda?
That's just a rhetorical question. Please, next time post everything.
I don't know, why there is no device sda, why the first device is sdb.
What is the output of
sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt && ls -l /mnt && cat /mnt/etc/issue
