Grub problem since update

Yesterday I accepted some software updates to  Ubuntu 12.04, one of them 
was to grub. Now the grub menu I normally see is gone.  From memory what 
I used to see is:

Ubuntu        # this is ubuntu 14.04
Ubuntu advanced
*Ubuntu 12.04     # this was the default
other options including memtest

Now, again from memory, I see:

ubuntu
previous ubuntu
ubuntu with linux generic ...
memtest

Memtest is now the default.  If I select the very first entry I am 
booted to 12.04.

What do I need to do to get back the grub menu I am used to seeing.
