login problem

I could imagine three reasons:
1. A typo in the password e.g. due to activated capslock. But of course
then there should be an error message.
2. There is no space left on the disk.
3. The file $HOME/.Xauthority is owned by root.
Next time it happens, you could check if you can login after using the
shortcut CTRL-ALT-F1. And then you could check if there is a hint in the
log file "/var/log/Xorg.0.log".

Without success, I suppose...

I don't think it is related to the kernel, but who knows. Anyway, you
could always check it if you boot with an older kernel.
