Help with sound

The controls in alsamixer were a bit confusing in that I was not able to
change some things, did not understand what some of them were, and never
found basic stuff like "mute" to un-mute it with.

So I tried pavucontrol, in which I was able to turn off HDMI/Display Port,
turn on Built-in analog stereo services, and see that the sound was being
sent somewhere (I was playing a youtube video, and could see movement.
There was still, however, not a peep from the speakers.  These speakers,
remember,  make lots of noise for Windows 7 when I boot to that.
