I wrote earlier (without thinking) that maybe software updater was closing
because it couldn't "see" the upgrade. As you know, however, when there are
no upgrades, it tells you.
I used to notice on a low-memory machine (less than 2GB RAM, after
deducting for video memory), software updater would crash sometimes if it
tried to run while I had RAM hogs like Chromium with lots of tabs, Firefox
with a Flash thing running and/or Thunderbird, all at the same time.
You might make sure you have the bug reporter tool turned on or run
update-manager from a terminal to see why it's quitting. I bet there's
already a bug filed about it.
