I had the same issue on my laptop and was able to solve it by adding
acpi_backlight=vendor to /etc/default/grub.

After you make the edit, it should look something like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_backlight=vendor quiet"

After you make the change, you'll need to update grub:
sudo apt-get update-grub

Try it out and see if it works (you'll have to reboot).
