Today the switch stopped working altogether, so I stripped down the
distribution block and replaced the crappy switch, which is just a
standard push fit panel mount rocker that I could get from Maplin for a
couple of quid.

So I can now run my desktop computer and things again, but I have no
explanation for why the server shut itself down in the first place. One
of life's little mysteries perhaps.
