weird delay thuderbird and samba

Just tossing out an idea: I've seen a couple recent posts (though
without follow-up/confirmation/definitive-conclusion) about Thunderbird
hogging memory and becoming unresponsive (or perhaps causing
unresponsiveness), especially after resume from a sleep mode.
So I would look at Thunderbird's use of memory and swap.
